Every year, UC San Diego Structural Engineering students take part in the fabrication and construction of a scaled steel bridge. The challenge is to design the bridge to adhere to the rules, while remaining competitive. Students apply the knowledge learned in class to design the bridge using SAP2000 and SolidWorks. Additionally, students gain experience at the campus' machine shop, CRMS. Through the first half of the academic year, students will design and then fabricate the bridge in the machine shop. Once fabrication has been completed, a smaller team will construct the bridge in as little time as possible. The final product will be rated on: aesthetics, weight, timed construction, as well as other categories. Students will be challenged to come up with creative ideas while gaining knowledge of steel design.
